LONG BEACH, Calif. -- The Cal Poly men and UC Irvine women won the team titles at the 2025 Big West Track & Field Championships, Saturday at Jack Rose Track on the campus of Long Beach State.
Men’s Recap
The Cal Poly men captured the team title with 186 points, starting the day with 65. Cal Poly has now won two straight team titles. Cal State Fullerton was second with 167 points and Long Beach State was third with 127.
Cal Poly dominated the distance events. The Mustangs went 1-2-3-4 in the 1500m with Aidan McCarthy (3:39.35), Carson Smith (3:39.61), Chris Caudillo (3:41.50) and Spencer Pickren (3:42.49). All four went under Phillip Reid’s previous meet record by more than three seconds (3:42.54).
McCarthy came back to win the 800m, securing the mid-distance double gold, crossing the finish line in 1:46.62. UC Irvine’s Angel Cordero (1:48.10) and Cal Poly’s Smith (1:48.82) were second and third, respectively.
The Mustangs did much of the same in the 5000m, sweeping the top three spots with Michael Chambers (14:34.76), Chris Caudillo (14:35.38) and Spencer Pickren (14:38.37).
Cal State Fullerton took most of the podium spots in the sprints. The Titans swept both relay events. The Titans won the 4x100m with a time of 39.54. UC Santa Barbara was second (40.18) and Long Beach State (40.234) edged out CSUN (40.236) for third. Cal State Fullerton (3:08.49) edged out CSUN (3:09.26) for the 4x400m win. UC Riverside (3:11.71) was third.
Cal State Fullerton swept the podium in the 110 hurdles. Abel Jordan (13.51) broke Dedy Cooper’s previous meet record of 13.60. Joshua Hornsby (13.96) and Carter Birade (14.01) took silver and bronze, respectively.
Long Beach State’s Tristyn Flores was a double gold winner in the short sprints. Flores won the men’s 100m with a new conference meet record of 10.10. Cal State Fullerton went 2-3 with Jordan (10.29) and John Clifford (10.31). Flores took the 200m crown with a 20.64 effort. Cal State Fullerton’s Ian Dossman (20.78) and Isaiah Emerson (20.81) were second and third, respectively.
Emerson was the winner in the 400m with a 46.77 performance. CSUN’s Tibyasa Matovu (46.96) and Cal Poly's Chase Walter (47.04) earned podium spots as well.
UC Santa Barbara’s Finn Andrews won the 400m hurdles with a time of 50.63. Cal State Fulleton’s Donovan Garcia (51.02) and Cal Poly’s Vincent Atilano (51.88) took silver and bronze, respectively.
UC Irvine’s Liam Miksic is now a three-time Big West javelin champion with a toss of 71.06m/233’1”. Cal Poly’s Colby Neron (68.35m/224’3”) and Long Beach State’s Elliott Payne (64.88m/212’10”) also made the podium.
UC Santa Barbara’s Eithan Goore captured a second straight title in the pole vault with a clearance of 5.30m/17’4.5”. Cal Poly’s Ben Freyer was second at 5.20m/17’0.75”. There was a four-way tied for third between Aidan Hagerty of UC Davis, Long Beach State’s Cyprus Rice, Ryan Ishibashi of UC Davis and Long Beach State’s Glen Quayle. All four cleared 4.90m/16’0.75”.
The men’s discus title went to Canaan Wharry with a 57.49m/188’7” effort. UC Irvine’s Jacob Hawkins (55.75m/182’11”0 and CSUN’s Elijah Ignacio (55.08m/180’8”) were second and third, respectively.
CSUN’s Jay Louison-Roe was the men’s triple jump winner with a 15.67m/51’5” performance. UC Irvine’s Kenechukwu Okonkwo (15.62m/51’3”) and UC Riverside’s Kyan Thomas (15.45m/50’8.75”) also made it on the podium.
Women’s Recap
The UC Irvine women won the team title with 150.5 points, just 1.5 ahead of second-place Cal Poly (149). Long Beach State was third with 109.5 points.
Cal State Fullerton won the 4x100m relay crown with a time of 44.71. UC Irvine was right behind at 44.87, followed by Long Beach State 44.90.
The Anteaters saw podium finishes in the 800m, 1500m, 400 hurdles and javelin.
Cal Poly’s Tatiana Cornejo won a second-straight title in the 1500m, crossing the line in 4:36.74. UC Irvine’s Malia Gay (4:38.11) and Lucy Milliner of Hawai’i (4:38.81) were 2-3, respectively. UC Irvine went 1-2 in the 800m, with Luz Mercado (2:08.12) and Gay (2:08.65). Cornejo was third at 2:09.07.
UC Irvine’s Jazzmine Davis claimed the 400m hurdles title with a 58.14 performance. UC San Diego’s Amari Jenkins (58.21) and UC Irvine’s Esmeray Demirbas (58.23) took silver and bronze, respectively.
Long Beach State went 1-2 in the 100m hurdles with Rahni Turner (13.08) and Claudine Raud-Gumiel (13.34). UC Irvine’s Jazzmine Davis (13.42) was third.
Hawai’i took the top two spots in the javelin with Lilian Turban (46.53m/152’8”) and Rose Forshaw (44.35m/145’6”). UC Irvine’s Jolie Robinson (43.81m/143’8”) was third. Turban won double gold in two unique events with the high jump on Friday and javelin on Saturday.
Long Beach State’s Sofia Lavreshina earned the 400m gold with a time of 53.18. Maya Shinnick of UC Davis (53.34) and CSUN’s Jasmine Haskell (53.71) also made the podium.
Cal State Fullerton’s Brooklyn Davis won the 100m with a time of 11.54. Cal State Bakersfield’s Makiah Parker (11.57) and Long Beach State’s Trinity Barnett (11.60) were second and third, respectively. Parker came back to win the 200m gold at 23.26. UC Riverside’s Raykiya Olukoju (23.30) and Cal State Fullerton’s Ashley Odiase (23.41) were second and third, respectively.
Cal Poly went 1-2-3 in the 5000m event with Schuyler Gooley (16:27.91), Hana Catsimanes (16:33.94) and Kelli Gaffney (16:41.82).
In the women’s pole vault, Cal Poly’s Lexi Evans had the top clearance at 4.27m/14’0”. Helen Hoadley of Hawai’i (4.17m/13’8.25”) and Cal State Fullerton’s Atianna Marquez (3.87m/12’8.5”) earned silver and bronze, respectively.
CSUN’s Summer Mosely won a second event. After claiming the hammer throw title, Mosley won the discus with a toss of 53.51m/175'6”. Long Beach State’s Maren Butler (51.01m/167’4”) and Samaria Vital of Hawai’i (50.30m/165’0”) also made the podium.
UC Santa Barbara’s Kennedy Johnson (12.79m/41’11.5”) edged out Cal Poly’s Melody Nwagwu (12.74m/41’9.75”) for the crown in the triple jump. Tara Wyllie of Hawai’i was third at 12.52m/41’1”.
UC San Diego (3:37.90) crossed the finish line first in the 4x400m relay, followed by UC Riverside (3:39.80) and Cal State Fullerton (3:40.77). The team title came down to UC Irvine and Cal Poly in the race. The Anteaters finished in 3:43.67, edging out Cal Poly at 3:44.02 for sixth place, three points and the team trophy.
