Tucson Elite Classic - Saturday Recap

Shelby Moran followed her victory Thursday in the women’s hammer throw at the Tucson Elite Classic with another strong performance to win Saturday morning at Roy P. Drachman Stadium in Tucson, Ariz.

David Ocampo, representing Mexico, also triumphed for the second time in three days in the men’s javelin throw.

Moran, an Oregon graduate, achieved a fourth-round throw of 230 feet (70.11m) on Saturday, adding to her 233-8 (71.22m) hammer performance Thursday.

Ocampo had a fourth-round effort Saturday of 236-8 (72.15m), which followed his 241-2 (73.51m) javelin mark Thursday.

Johnnie Jackson, a former LSU standout, won the men’s hammer throw Saturday, as the top three athletes all delivered their best marks in the fourth round.

Jackson prevailed at 237-4 (72.35m), Alabama graduate Kieran McKeag had a throw of 234-8 (71.53m) and Northern Arizona junior Garret Bernt produced a mark of 232-3 (70.80m).

Donroy Brown of Southeastern Louisiana won the men’s shot put Saturday with a fifth-round performance of 61-4.25 (18.70m).

Sam Hala’Ufia, an Arizona junior, had an opening-round effort of 187-4 (57.11m) to secure victory in the men’s discus throw.

Jade Kwinn, also representing Arizona, began the schedule by winning the women’s javelin throw with a 129-8 (39.54m) performance in the opening round.

Onome Ogbeni, a Nigerian athlete at Grand Canyon University, triumphed in the women’s shot put with a first-round mark of 41-8.50 (12.71m).
